Zener Cards – How High Can You Score?

Zener cards are a 25-card deck with five repeated geometric symbols—circle, cross, wavy lines, square, and star designed in the 1930s by Karl Zener and J.B. Rhine to test ESP through above-chance guessing.

How to Play

Shuffle the deck and place cards with the symbols face down. Play solo or with friends.

Solo: Visualise the symbol before flipping, if you guessed correctly place with the symbol face up to a second pile. If you guessed wrong, place it in a third pile with the symbol face down. When all the cards from the pile are exhausted then count the number of cards you guessed correctly.

With friends: Ask them to look at the card and ‘beam’ it to you. You say what you think it is, they can mark right or wrong with a pencil and paper, and tell you the score at the end. Playing with friends I find I am ‘one card ahead’ with my guesses.

Scoring:

• Up to 7 – within chance
• 10 or more – Significant, 1 in 58
• 15 or more – Extreme, 1 in 73,720
• 17 or more – Outstanding, 1 in 3.8 million
• 20 or more – Astonishing, 1 in 5.2 billion

An ‘average’ guess would be around 20% correct. My experience is with cards, and an app, when I am in a relaxed state I can get between 10 and 14 out of 25 ‘guesses’ correct. When I’m not in the moment and my mind is on other things, then getting between 2 and 5 correct is the norm.

Last night I managed a respectable 11 out of 25 after spending a few moments getting myself into a more meditative state, the odds are around 1 in 250, so statically significant.

Next time you’re in a calm, receptive space, try a few rounds and notice not just your score, but how you feel before, during and after. That, in many ways, is where the real insight begins.
